Inaugurated in 1850, Teatro Principal is the oldest theatre
in the city. It has a seat capacity of 500. Currently it is
used alternately as a theatre and cinema. In terms of performance
arts, the theatre hosts its regular winter calendar of events
as well as special summer performances. Regular programming
includes highly acclaimed theatre companies as well as lesser
known avant-garde groups, with special emphasis places on
the exhibition of Basque theatre groups. Teatro Principal
makes an effort to provide a space for theatre performed in
Euskera. To help promote the exhibition of plays in the Basque
language, every March 27th Teatro Principal hosts the “Donostia
Antzerki Saria” award for the best play performed in
Donostia the previous year. In the summer season Teatro Principal
sets the stage for the leading theatre companies in Spain.

Lugaritz, inaugurated on 30 May 1993, was the first cultural
centre to be outfitted with a stage. The theatre has a seating
capacity of 240, and caters to smaller-scale theatre performances.
Programming at the Lugaritz cultural centre features a variety
of events such as small-format theatre particularly aimed
at younger audiences, and children’s theatre, mainly
in Euskera.

Egia is a modern performance centre inaugurated in 1998.
The so-called “Gazteszena” theatre is a multi-purpose
area designed as a venue for a wide variety of stage productions,
devoted mainly to alternative activities. The theatre can
accommodate 264 people seated or 500 standing. Stage productions
also include modern dance troupes, a wide variety of music
with pop groups, jazz bands and ethnic music. The Egia cultural
centre also stages performances for children, mainly in
Euskera.

Spanish
architect Rafael Moneo designed the two translucent cubes
to look like “two rocks that have been washed ashore”.
The Kursaal was inaugurated in 2000 and has become a symbol
of culture and of the city itself. A number of the events
in the Theatre Fair are performed at the Kursaal Auditorium
and Congress Centre. |
